Our topic for the first half of the 2016-17 season…

Defending Our Faith

As born-again believers in Jesus, we daily enjoy so many blessings of God’s unmerited favor toward us (Eph. 1:3).  As good stewards of the grace we have received, we are to share our faith and the message of the gospel with others who don’t yet know the reality of God and the riches of His grace.  In addressing the Philippian church, the apostle Paul described his mission as “the defense and confirmation of the gospel” (Phil. 1:7).  In the process of sharing the good news of God’s love for mankind through Jesus Christ, we ourselves often find that we are met with resistance in the form of deep questions which are difficult for us to answer and objections which are difficult for us to counter.   Although most of these questions are legitimate, in today’s culture they are often emotionally charged, and that adds to our uncertainty as to how to answer effectively.  (Our emotions don’t do an adequate job of answering questions that deserve a logical answer!)  Furthermore, the Bible instructs us to answer with gentleness and respect (1 Pet. 3:15-16).  It would be helpful if we were to have a resource which itemized all the common objections to saving faith along with all the proper answers.

We are pleased to announce that we do in fact have such a resource.  Through mid-January, we will be viewing and discussing Dr. Frank Turek’s 12-part video seminar, Why I Still Don’t Have Enough Faith to be an Atheist. In addition to being personable, Dr. Turek has an articulate and convincing argument for the existence of truth and the existence of God. He goes on to prove that miracles are possible, and finally to convince us that not only is the New Testament true, but that we have an accurate copy, the New Testament writers told the truth, and that the books included in the New Testament are the books that should be there. Here is a 2½-minute summary by Dr. Turek himself:

This series was shown in one of our ABFs recently, and the teacher said that it generated the best discussions the class has ever had. So this Fall, we will not only have the opportunity to prove that true, but we will have an opportunity to reach out to our colleagues from work, our friends, our neighbors, and even our family members with a non-threatening presentation of the truth. Each week, we will view the video presentation and then review a handout summarizing what was said in the video. This will serve as a springboard for discussion and sharing.

So please join us on Thursday evenings this Fall, beginning September 15, to have your faith strengthened, and to enjoy blessing, fellowship, and encouragement as we gather together.
