Prison Epistles lesson 23

Dangers To Your Faith Part 1
(Colossians 2:8-23)

KEY TRUTH: The traps of human philosophy and man’s tradition are avoided by focusing on Jesus Christ who accomplished your salvation and offers all you need.

  1. The danger of human philosophy and man’s tradition (Colossians 2:8-10)
    1. Human philosophy and man’s tradition cheat you and hold you captive.
    2. Human philosophy and man’s tradition confront us everywhere.
    3. Human philosophy and man’s tradition require us to be careful and biblically informed.
      1. In Jesus Christ are found all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. (Colossians 2:3)
      2. In Jesus Christ is found the fullness of the Godhead bodily. (Colossians 2:9)
      3. In Jesus Christ we are complete. (Colossians 2:10)
  2. The danger of ceremonialism  (Colossians 2:11-17)
    1. The problem in the first century
    2. The problem today – there are still those who try to bind people under law.
    3. The solution to ceremonialism is the work of Jesus Christ.
      1. Through baptism into Christ, we experience the “true circumcision.” (Colossians 2:11-13)
      2. By His death on the cross, Jesus has taken the Old Law out of the way. (Colossians 2:14-15)
      3. We are not judged or evaluated in matters of the Law. (Colossians 2:16-17)

IMPLICATIONS

  • We must know our vulnerabilities.
    • You will be attracted to information that confirms something you want to believe. If you like what you hear, you’re less likely to evaluate it very carefully.
    • You will tend to reject things you don’t fully understand or don’t like. You will look for an excuse to reject unwelcome truth.
    • You will tend to be swayed by personality and presentation.  An effective presentation and the sincerity of the speaker will carry more weight than it should.
  • We must use God’s Word as a constant reference point.
