Living It Out: Husbands and Wives

Key Truth: God calls Christian wives to submit to their husbands as the church submits to Christ, and Christian husbands to lead their wives as Christ leads the church. 

Ephesians 5:22-33

OUTLINE 

  1. A marriage where God is honored. Ephesians 5:21–31
    1. The duty of wives – submit to your husband as the church submits to Christ. (Ephesians 5:22-24)
    2. The duty of husbands – lead your wife as Christ leads the church. (Ephesians 5:25-31)
      1. Love – Christ loved the church. (Ephesians 5:25)
      2. Give – Christ gave Himself up for the church. (Ephesians 5:25)
      3. Sanctify – Christ’s goal is a church that is “set apart” to Himself. (Ephesians 5:26)
      4. Cleanse – Christ is cleansing His church through the word. (Ephesians 5:26)
      5. Present – Christ will present the church as a radiant bride without blemish. (Ephesians 5:27)
  2. A marriage where God is reflected. (Ephesians 5:32-33)
    1. God is reflected in the true nature of marriage.
      1. Marriage is rooted in creation.
      2. Marriage is rooted in the relationship between God and His people.
    2. God is reflected in the union of marriage.

IMPLICATIONS

  • Jesus acted for the benefit of those He led. (Mark 10:45)
  • Jesus led by being actively engaged as He personally taught and instructed His followers.
  • Jesus led by example.
  • Jesus maintained His authority while delegating and sharing responsibility.
  • Jesus led in ways that were careful, loving and tender as opposed to harsh or cruel. (1 Peter 3:7)
